Anatomy of Bones

Anatomy of a Long Bone

Picture
Osteoblasts - bone forming cells
Collagen - major component of bones made of protein fibers that give bone flexibility
Calcium Phosphate - major component of bones that give them their hardness
Red Bone Marrow - found in spongy bone, it produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
Articular Cartilage - all bone is lined with this which interacts with adjacent bones and allows for smooth movement as well as acts as a shock  absorber
Periosteum - the tough covering of fibrous tissue around the outer surface of the shaft that helps repair bone tissue and allows tendons and         ligaments to attach to the bone
Epiphyseal plate - commonly called the growth plate, this is where cartilage is deposited and is later replaced by bone as a person grows
Osteoclasts - bone remodeling cells
